Usiglian del Vescovo

Located in the district of Palaia on Valdera hills near the Tyrrhenian coast, Usiglian del Vescovo takes name from an ancient feud owned by the bishop of Pisa in the XI century while the bishop of Lucca was in possession of the feud of Palaia. Of the same period are the castle and the church of San Pietro with its Romanic remains both situated in the center of the estate.

During the centuries, Usigliano has always maintained the features of a small village of about 200 inhabitants and only in the last years has been depopulating. Today the estate occupies an area of 160 hectares with 18 hectares of vineyards and 15 hectares of olive groves.

In the center of the estate there’s the villa of Usigliano, the residence of the owner, that in the past controlled all the farm houses in the neighborhood.

The farm has been widely renovated, in fact a new cellar has been built and the old and historical one has been restored like all the vineyards. The soils of Usigliano rest on profiles of Pliocene origin corresponding to the erection of a coastal alluvial plain rich in marine fossils: its structure varies from sandy-silty mixture to a medium one.

The farm takes benefit from a good exposure especially for the vine growing, it is affected by a favorable microclimate characterized by regular rainfall, constant breeze and hot summers cooled by temperature range at night.

The vines are grown in a spur cordon system with a density of 5,000 plans per hectare.

The vineyards, with south – southwest exposure, produce Sangiovese and other varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and, as for the white production, Chardonnay and Viogner.

The farm with its 3,000 olive trees, belonging to cultivar Frantoio and Leccino, produce an excellent extra virgin olive oil too.
