Solonio

Our history

At the time of Imperial Rome, the Colli Lanuvini area produced wines that graced celebrated banquets held by Roman patricians. It was precisely the Romans who exported the culture of wine-making to their colonies which fostered the creation all the enological varieties we enjoy today. From this point of view, the hills just south of Rome can be considered the enological cradle of the Old World!

Solonio, a wine producing company belonging to the Le Tenute di Genagricola Group, has taken this inheritance and revitalized it with passion, valorizing several exceptional native vines and other international varieties capable of offering unique emotions, especially because this wines’ value is combined with history’s intriguing charm.

Owned by Genagricola since 19XX, it boasts 100 vine-filled hectares, located on the Colli Lanuvio hills. Genagricola’s experience in this territory matched with its research and analysis of these terrains has pushed the company to renew its vineyards over the years. As a result, it has opted to plant red grape vineyards rather than the white grapes that are typically from this area.

This choice has resulted in the creation of a line of red wines with distinct personalities. Native varieties like Cesanese and Montepulciano are flanked by international types like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Our philosophy

In this blessed territory, the land offers all types of firstlings including wonderful fruit (peaches, plums and kiwi) and various vegetables. Those enjoying its sights will appreciate a continuous expanse of perfectly kept gardens.

For Solonio, we’ve chosen viticulture and enology that’s fit to measure up to a challenge: our goal is to carve a place for Lazio among the top wine producing regions in Italy.
In our Colli di Lanuvio vineyards, we have chosen to favor the cultivation of red grapes, selecting some native varieties like Cesanese and Montepulciano and other international types like Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The dry breezy climate of the lower Lazio area, combined with the thermal moderation created by the nearby Tyrrhenian sea, allows for optimal maturation of these red grapes with noteworthy color compliments and a great wealth of tannins, that are ever soft and silky.

Planting layouts are very thick. Thus, should pruning prove insufficient for keeping grape production under 2.5-3 kg per plant, some bunches are eliminated during successive manual selection. Quality is our primary objective and as is our custom, it is primarily pursued in the vineyard, where wine’s quality is truly generated.

The autumn’s very dry climate has encouraged us to adopt a moderate withering processes in specialized areas, using small lots of grapes; results have proved very satisfactory.

In the cellar, we take care to work the grapes using special attention and discretion so that we can transfer their integral qualities to the wine, in terms of scent and flavor. Our wine also encapsulates a millenary history that perhaps finds its very roots in the Colli di Lanuvio hills.
